Let Political Ads Go The Way of Cigarette Commercials (crooksandliars)
When asked to report on the onslaught of political ads on television words
like “flood,” “deluge,” and “torrent,” will suddenly pepper copy. A report
from the Borrell Associates estimates $9.8 billion will be spent on political
advertising this season. Nearly 60 percent of that will be on television.
Phrases like “secret money” and “shadow funders” also pop up. Conservatives,
traditionally, call for transparency when it comes to money in politics.
Liberals will call for limits. Right now we have neither. And nowhere is that
more apparent than on your teevee.
Ask anyone in even a slightly purple state or in an even slightly contested
district: Political ads are a plague come election time. And what exactly are
we getting for our (estimated) $42 per potential voter? Not much.
Ads are not transparent, not fact checked and in many cases not accountable.
Voters get to feel like Alex DeLarge in “A Clockwork Orange” during his
aversion therapy (eye drops, anyone?) without knowing who’s footing the bill.
A way to combat this Stanley Kubrick-esque torment is just ban all political
advertisements on television.
“That’s an assault on free speech.”
First off television is not an unregulated utopia of free ...
why is it that people wont inform themselves on the voting records, dealings of the 2 canidates? ?
is it because the mainstream media floods us with sound bits, quips taken out of context etc. or is it the fact that we have forgoten about the internet and the ability to check things out for our selves?
There's a host of reasons.
Some don't care to get informed.
Some have been informed and found the truth threatened what they WANTED to believe, so they ignored it.
Some don't have access or knowledge of how to get to non-biased or alternative news sources to verify what they hear. (Try living in a poor, semi-literate, non internet connected south Louisiana swamp county or inner-city Cabrini Green housing complex. People don't have the technology or political acumen to research the real facts.)
Some people vote on single issues and just absorb the rest if they care (or care to be accurate) or not.
Some people have a need or interest that one candidate fills and will be willing to believe ANYTHING about the one that doesn't (again, if one candidate says to a poor, illiterate person on food stamps, "I'll double your food stamp allotment." Then that person will be led to believe that the "other" guy will have them eating cat food out of the tin because they aren't saying the same thing.)
Some people may be looking for reasons to justify deeper truths about themselves than they care to face or admit ("I can't admit I'm racist deep down, but if I convince myself he is in fact a Muslim, it is a valid reason not to vote for him because Muslims attacked us.")
And some people just have honest, hard-to-correct misconceptions about the candidates.

In short, more and more research seems to be showing that brain is wired to relate concepts and to associate them "positively." That is part of the reason for so much confusion.
For example, a lot of people believe that Obama is a Muslim precisely becuase they heard sentences like "Obama is NOT a Muslim."
Over time, the brain tends to drop the word NOT because the brain is wired to think more of IS (positive statements, not negative).
But, while dropping the word NOT, it is also simultaneously relating the concepts of Obama and Muslim.
So the more you try to convince the person that the statement is not true, the more you are actually associating those relationships in their head -- essentially reinforcing the very association that you are trying to correct.
The best strategy is to instead correct them positively (i.e. do not say "Obama is not a Muslim," but instead say "Obama is a Christian." Rebut in the positive, not the negative.)
I also wish everyone would get more informed and care more about the truth of things, but the reality is that, like it or not, many don't for a number of nuanced reasons.
